Asset manager fee economics and operating leverage

Fee rates, compression, performance fees, margin.

By Surojit Chakraverti, founder of L3VLUP and an investor running a long-short healthcare and technology equities strategy.

On this subject: asset manager fee economics and operating leverage.Updated 30 October 2026

What it does

How assets become profit. Each product’s management fee is average AUM times a fee rate in basis points, and every rate drifts down a little each year; the blended rate falls further as the mix moves towards cheaper products. Performance fees on alternatives are forecast at a probability, because they depend on returns no one can promise. Compensation is a ratio of revenue, while most other costs are fixed, so margin moves faster than revenue in both directions: the operating leverage that makes asset managers cyclical.

What a reviewer looks for

  • One fee rate for every product, so a shift in mix changes nothing.
  • Performance fees forecast at their full potential.
  • Every cost a share of revenue, which hides the operating leverage.
