How this route works
Hedge funds used to hire almost exclusively from banks and consultancies. The large multi-strategy platforms changed that: Citadel, Millennium, Point72 and their peers now run structured internships and analyst academies that take people directly from university, publish real windows, and screen with the same early mechanics as banking.
The seats split into two very different markets. Platform programmes are large, structured and tracked here with real dates. Single-manager funds hire a handful of people a year, rarely advertise, and recruit through networks and stock pitches; for those, the pitch is the application, and the guide below matters more than any deadline.
What every route shares is the bar: a view, sized, with a stop. From the first conversation you are expected to talk about positions you would actually put on, which is why a tracked paper portfolio or a written pitch is the single most credible thing a student can bring.
Frequently asked questions
Do hedge funds hire straight from university?
The large multi-strategy platforms do, through structured internships and analyst academies with published windows, and those are the seats tracked here. Single-manager funds mostly still hire experienced analysts out of banking, equity research and each other, through networks rather than postings.
What does a hedge fund interview test?
A view. Expect market questions from the first round, a stock pitch or trade idea you can defend under pushback, and probability and sizing intuition. The platforms also run the standard early screens: online tests, video interviews and technical rounds, closer to a banking process than the industry’s reputation suggests.
What should I prepare first?
One pitch, properly. A single well-built stock pitch with a thesis, a variant perception, catalysts and risks answers most of what any fund interview asks, and it compounds: the second pitch is far easier than the first. Build it before the windows open, then keep it current.
Before you apply
A deadline is only useful if the application behind it is ready. The screening stages differ by programme type, so the kit does too.
