How this route works
Investment banking hires earlier, more mechanically and in larger classes than any other seat in finance, which is exactly why it rewards people who treat the calendar as part of the job. The ladder runs spring week to summer internship to graduate analyst, each stage feeding the next, and most of the eventual intake is decided a year or more before the desk is joined.
The firms differ more than the job titles suggest. Bulge brackets run the biggest classes and the most automated screening. Elite boutiques such as Rothschild, Evercore and Lazard run smaller processes where a cover letter is still read by a person. Middle-market and industry-specialist banks are the most under-applied-to seats on this page relative to the experience they give a junior.
Restructuring deserves a note of its own: it is the most technical advisory seat and one of the few that gets busier when markets get worse. What is the difference between a bulge bracket and an elite boutique?

Elite boutiques are advisory-focused firms with smaller classes, leaner deal teams and processes where written applications still get human attention. Juniors at boutiques typically see more of each deal; juniors at bulge brackets see more deals.
How do I get into restructuring?
Usually through a generalist analyst programme at a firm with a strong restructuring practice, then internal staffing into the group.
