Equity Research Associate resume example
Student or graduate · US resume · set in the Harvard Graduate template
Equity research hires people who can form a view, support it with numbers and write it down clearly. The resume is a writing sample in itself. A reader looks for coverage you have done, models you have built from filings, and evidence you can communicate a call.
A sample person: the name, employers and figures are invented. A finance graduate with a research internship, a published stock pitch and CFA Level I, applying for an equity research associate role.
The order, and why
Education first with GPA and CFA progress, then research experience, then a short projects block for published work, then skills.
Weak bullets, made strong
Weak: Researched companies in the technology sector
Strong: Built earnings models for 8 software companies under coverage from 10-K and 10-Q filings, updating estimates within 24 hours of each print
Coverage size, the source, the work and the turnaround.
Weak: Wrote a stock pitch
Strong: Published a long recommendation on a payments company at $42 with a $58 target, presented to a 15-person student fund that took a 4% position
The call, the target, the audience and the outcome.
Mistakes to avoid
- A pitch with no price, target or outcome.
- Every bullet the same length and shape. Research readers notice writing.
- Leaving out CFA progress, which shortens the conversation on technical basics.
UK CV or US resume
US: GPA, expected graduation month and CFA level on the resume; one page. UK: include degree classification and A-levels, and the same one-page rule applies.
