Software Engineer resume example

Student or graduate · US resume · set in the Modern Tech template

A software engineering resume is read by recruiters for keywords and by engineers for substance. It has to get past the first with the right stack and convince the second with what you shipped, at what scale, and what it changed.

A sample person: the name, employers and figures are invented. A computer science senior with two engineering internships and a widely used open-source project, applying for new-grad roles.

The order, and why

Education first for a new graduate, then experience, then projects; skills grouped by type at the end.

Weak bullets, made strong

Weak: Worked on the backend team using Go

Strong: Built a rate-limiting service in Go handling 12K requests a second, cutting abuse-related outages from 3 a month to none

What, in what, at what scale, and the result.

Weak: Made a web app

Strong: Built an open-source study planner in TypeScript and React with 4,000 monthly users and 1,200 GitHub stars

Real users make a side project read like work.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Bullets that describe the team’s work rather than yours.
  • A skills section of 30 technologies. Group them and keep what you would be happy to be interviewed on.
  • No links. A repository or deployed project is the strongest evidence a new graduate has.

UK CV or US resume

US: one page, GPA if 3.5 or above, expected graduation month. UK and Europe: same structure, called a CV, with degree classification.
