The summer internship is the main hiring channel in finance. Banks and funds fill the large majority of their graduate analyst intakes from the summer class that preceded it, which means the internship is effectively a ten-week interview and the graduate application round is a much narrower door for anyone who did not intern.

Timing runs a year ahead of intuition. Applications for a summer internship generally open the previous summer or early autumn — roughly twelve months before the internship starts — and most large banks assess on a rolling basis. Penultimate-year students who wait until the spring term of their target year have usually missed the main window.

The technical bar at application stage is lower than candidates fear and the behavioural bar is higher than they expect. Screening turns on tests, a video interview and a clear, consistent motivation story; the accounting and valuation questions arrive at assessment centre and final round.

Frequently asked questions

When should you apply for a finance summer internship?

Roughly twelve months before the internship begins. Most large banks open applications in the summer or early autumn of the preceding year and recruit on a rolling basis, so the practical deadline is when places fill rather than the published closing date.

What conversion rate do summer internships have?

Conversion varies by bank and by year, but summer internships are the primary graduate hiring channel across investment banking — the majority of incoming analyst classes are filled from the preceding summer cohort. Direct graduate hiring exists but competes for a much smaller number of remaining seats.

Can you get a summer internship without a spring week?

Yes. A spring week is an advantage because it front-loads relationships and can fast-track the process, but banks hire summer interns directly every year from candidates with no prior insight programme. It matters more that your application is early and your story is coherent.

Before you apply

A deadline is only useful if the application behind it is ready. These are the free resources that matter most for this route specifically — the screening stages differ by programme type, so the kit does too.
