The best explanations of almost any technical topic are already free. Damodaran teaches valuation to the same standard he teaches it at NYU. Meta staff engineers publish full system design walkthroughs. 3Blue1Brown draws the transformer. The scarce thing was never the teaching. It is knowing which twelve minutes of a ninety-minute lecture answer the question in front of you, and doing something with them afterwards other than nodding.
Why watching more video does not work
Watching a clear explanation feels like learning, and that feeling is the problem. Psychologists call it the fluency illusion: when material is presented well, your brain reads the ease of following it as evidence that you now know it. You do not. You have recognised it. Recognition is what a multiple-choice question tests on a good day; recall under pressure is what an interviewer tests on every day.
The gap shows up at a predictable moment. You watched three DCF videos over a weekend, you could follow every step, and then someone asked why unlevered free cash flow is discounted at WACC rather than the cost of equity and you produced silence. Nothing was wrong with the videos. The problem was that watching was the entire study method.
The research on this is old and unusually consistent. Testing yourself on material produces substantially better retention than re-reading or re-watching it, even when the re-watching takes longer and feels more productive at the time. Spacing the sessions out beats doing them in one sitting. Neither finding is intuitive, which is why almost nobody studies that way by default.
The three failure modes
Most video-based preparation fails in one of three ways, and each has a specific fix.
- Hunting instead of learning. Forty minutes of searching, comparing thumbnails and reading comments, then twenty minutes of watching. The fix is to decide the curriculum before you open the search bar, so you are looking for an explanation of a concept you already named rather than browsing for a topic.
- Watching passively at 1.5x. You finish faster and retain less, and the speed makes it harder to notice the moment you stopped following. The fix is not slower playback; it is stopping at the end of each concept and saying the idea out loud in your own words before continuing.
- Never testing. This is the expensive one. Without a test, you cannot tell the difference between the six concepts you know and the two you only recognise, so you revise all eight equally and improve at neither.
A method that survives contact with an interview
The method below takes roughly forty minutes for a topic, split across two sessions two days apart. It is deliberately less watching than most people do, and considerably more retrieval.
- Name the concepts first. Write down the five or six ideas the topic is actually made of, in the order they build on each other. For a DCF: what it is solving, forecasting cash flow, the discount rate, terminal value, the bridge to equity value, and the sanity checks. If you cannot list them, that list is your first piece of work.
- Watch one clip per concept, in order. Not one video per topic. A single expert rarely explains all six equally well, and a ninety-minute lecture spends most of its length on things you did not come for.
- Stop after each clip and reconstruct it. Out loud, in a sentence or two, without pausing to check. The moment of not-quite-being-able-to is the moment the learning happens.
- Test immediately, before you feel ready. The wrong answers are the output of the session. They tell you where to spend the next ten minutes.
- Re-watch only what you got wrong. A targeted ninety seconds on terminal value beats replaying the full lecture, and it takes ninety seconds.
- Come back in two days and test again, cold. This is the step everyone skips and the one that decides whether any of it is still there in three weeks.
How a Primer reel runs the method for you

What video is bad at
Video is excellent for intuition and for watching an expert make a decision you would not have thought to make. It is poor at two things, and no amount of curation fixes either.
It cannot tell you whether you can do the thing. Only building the model, writing the code or answering out loud does that, which is why the honest place for a reel is at the start of a topic rather than the end of it. Watch the reel, take the check, then go and build the thing badly once. The second build is where the topic becomes yours.
It also cannot tell you what is wrong with your answer specifically. A quiz can say the terminal growth assumption is off; it cannot hear that you buried the recommendation, that you hedged three times before committing, or that your walkthrough is technically correct and impossible to follow. That gap is what a person is for.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I spend on one topic?
Fifteen minutes for the reel and the check, then ten minutes two days later on whatever you got wrong. Longer single sessions feel more serious and retain worse than two short ones separated by a couple of days.
Should I take notes while watching?
Not during the clip. Copying down what is on screen is a transcription task and it competes with understanding. Stop at the end of each concept and write two sentences from memory instead, which is retrieval rather than dictation.
Is it better to watch one long lecture or several short clips?
Several short clips from different teachers, provided they are sequenced by concept rather than shuffled. Different explanations of the same idea reinforce each other, and a lecture will always spend most of its length on things outside the question you came with.
Does watching at 1.5x or 2x speed hurt?
It reduces retention on material that is new to you, and it hides the moment you stopped following. On a second pass through something familiar, faster playback is fine and saves real time.
