Coding is a task and innovation is the purpose: automate the task, keep the job

Jensen Huang · NVIDIA's fiscal 2026 letter from Jensen Huang · 2026

The idea

The same NVIDIA letter separates a task from the purpose of a job. Coding is a task; innovation is the purpose. Automating the tasks should let people do more of the work that matters. It is an argument from a company that sells the automation, and it is also a usable frame for anyone asking what AI does to their own role. Write the purpose of the job in one line, list the tasks that currently fill the day, and mark which tasks a tool now does. What remains is the job as it will be, and it is usually closer to the purpose than the old task list was.

Name the purpose of a job separately from its tasks; automation changes the tasks and leaves the purpose to be done better or worse.

When it works

Answering what AI changes about an analyst role, planning a career, or assessing headcount claims in a bank.

When it may fail

Purposes can be automated too, and a job whose tasks are all automated may not keep its headcount however noble its purpose. The frame helps you plan; it does not guarantee the seat.

How to use it

For the seat you want, write the purpose in one line and the ten tasks in a list. Mark the tasks a current tool does well. Prepare to be judged on the rest, which is what the Primer clips on the analyst workflow show.

Where it came from

What the source says. Huang separates a task from the purpose of a job: coding is a task and innovation the purpose, so automating tasks should let people do more of the work that matters.

L3VLUP’s reading. This is the optimistic case made by a seller of the tools. The pit traders in Floored would say the purpose of their job survived too, and it did not pay them. Hold both.
