Quant recruiting is a separate market from the rest of finance, with its own firms, its own interview format and its own timeline. Proprietary trading firms and quantitative funds — Jane Street, Citadel Securities, Optiver, IMC, SIG, Jump, DRW and their peers — hire from mathematics, physics, computer science and engineering backgrounds, and screen almost entirely on quantitative ability rather than finance knowledge.

The three role families are distinct and candidates should target one. Quantitative trader interviews centre on mental arithmetic under time pressure, probability, expected value and market-making games. Quantitative researcher interviews go deeper into statistics, stochastic processes and machine learning, and usually require a PhD or equivalent research background. Quantitative developer interviews are software engineering interviews with a low-latency systems emphasis, typically in C++ or Python.

Timelines are earlier and faster than banking. The largest firms open applications in the summer for the following year and can move from online assessment to offer in two to three weeks, because the screening is objective and does not need committee alignment. Almost every process begins with a timed online test — mental maths, probability, or a coding assessment — that eliminates the large majority of applicants before any human involvement.

Frequently asked questions

What do quant trading interviews test?

Mental arithmetic under time pressure, probability and expected value, combinatorics, and market-making games where you quote two-sided prices and manage risk as information arrives. Brainteasers and estimation questions are common. Finance knowledge is rarely tested — the firms assume they can teach markets and cannot teach quantitative reasoning speed.

What is the difference between a quant trader, researcher and developer?

Traders make pricing and risk decisions in live markets and are screened on speed, probability and game sense. Researchers build the statistical models and signals behind those decisions, are screened on statistics, stochastic processes and machine learning, and usually hold a PhD. Developers build the low-latency systems that execute, and interview like specialist software engineers, typically in C++.

Do you need a PhD for a quant role?

For quantitative research at most top firms, effectively yes, or an equivalent research track record. For quantitative trading and quantitative development, no — those roles hire strongly at bachelors and masters level from mathematics, physics, computer science and engineering, and select on demonstrated quantitative ability rather than credential level.

Before you apply

A deadline is only useful if the application behind it is ready. These are the free resources that matter most for this route specifically — the screening stages differ by programme type, so the kit does too.
