About this letter

Steve Huffman, Reddit's co-founder, wrote this letter for the registration statement on form S-1 that Reddit filed with the SEC on 22 February 2024. Headed 'Letter from our co-founder', it opens the prospectus for the company's initial public offering, and Huffman notes that he came back to Reddit as chief executive in 2015.

He starts on 13 August 2005, the first day posts from real users filled the front page, and reports that more than 76 million people visited on average every day in December 2023. He compares Reddit to a growing city of more than 100,000 subreddits that its users, not the company, created, explains why the site lets people stay anonymous rather than tie their real and online identities together, and sets out why Reddit is going public. The second half of the letter turns to how the business can grow.

Why read it

It shows a founder of a user-built platform explaining a listing in terms of community ownership while naming advertising, commerce and data licensing as the ways the business will grow.

What to notice

  1. 1

Huffman wants users to become owners in the literal sense: Reddit invited users and moderators who had contributed to the site to buy shares in the IPO alongside its investors.
